Head of Department


The vision and mission of the Department of Surgery (the Department) is in line with the vision and mission of the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

The ethos of the Department of Surgery is integration of teaching, learning service delivery and community engagement and staff development.

The areas of priority are health service delivery and the development of skills for the whole Province of Province of KwaZulu-Natal. The ethos is also to enhance a culture of interdisciplinary research and collaboration within the faculty.

The Strategic goals for the Department, which are also in line with those of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, are:

  • High standards of clinical service
  • Equitable staff & student representation
  • High standards of teaching and learning
  • Department  of choice for postgraduate students and academics
  • High standards of Research
  • Responsive community engagement
  • Efficient and effective governance structure

Operational principles

The Headquarters of the Department is the Medical School. The main pillars of the Department are (i) Teaching & Learning, (ii) Research, (iii) Service delivery, (iv) Community engagement as well as (v) University administration

The Department is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching. It also participates in the teaching of allied Disciplines such as Theatre Nurses. There are two main teaching platforms for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching; one in Durban and the other in Pietermaritzburg. It offers general and qualifications in Surgery and teaches postgraduate students for Specialist degrees which are assessed y the College of Surgeons of South Africa. Furthermore it offers training for “Fellows” undergoing training in the subspecialties

Research is one of the important areas of prominence for the Department. The Department regards itself as the “Cutting Edge of Medicine” in the sense that it is an academic home for critical thought, academic development and research enterprise. One of the objectives is to advance African Scholarship through locally relevant and community directed research.

Service delivery takes most of the effort of the staff in the Department. This service is provided within the umbrella of the Department of Health. The primary objective is to deliver holistic Healthcare Healthcare through the whole of the KwaZulu-Natal Province.

In its approach to community engagement the Department is using the principles espoused by The University of KwaZulu-Natal and the Department of Health. Community engagement is in the form of outreach programmes to peripheral areas.

Members of staff in the Department of Surgery also play an active role in the official structures of the University and the Medical School thereby contributing to both policy and strategy formulation.
