BIOSKETCH
Professor Timothy Hardcastle, MBChB, MMed (Chir), FCS (SA), Trauma (HPCSA), PhD (UKZN) is the current President of the Surgical Research Society of South Africa, as well as the President of the Federation of South African Surgeons. He is a registered Trauma Critical Care Surgeon and is Director/Chief Specialist of Trauma & Burns at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital in Durban, Kwazulu-Natal, and Honorary Associate Professor of Surgery as head of the Trauma Fellowship Training Program at University of KwaZulu-Natal. He is also Provincial Head of Trauma and Burns for KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Health. He was Acting Chair of Surgery for UKZN for the period 15 Jan till 11 July 2022. Additionally, he holds an Associate Research Professorship in Health Sciences at Durban University of Technology. His PhD was in Trauma systems for LMIC’s. He is also Medical Director for various EMS services and Co-Chairs the National Snakebite Advisory Group. He is well published and cited in the field of trauma prehospital care, and critical care, with an H-index of 30. His clinical interests include snakebite wound care, vascular trauma, intensive care for trauma (including blunt chest trauma), and Trauma Systems with a focus on low-and middle-income countries (LMIC’s). He is an Associate Editor of five major international journals and reviews for a number of other journals. He serves on various WHO expert panels, including the snakebite group. He is a Deputy Chair of the UKZN BREC ethics committee and co-Chairs the CPD portfolio. He was the lead-author of the recently published National Snakebite Consensus (CME/SAMJ 2023) and a co-author on a number of WSES consensus papers over the past 5 years. He spends his (limited) spare time with his wife and children. He builds scale models to relax.
